The good news
Progress on the Middlebury sweater continues apace. I got one sleeve finished and sewn in, the other one about two-thirds knit, and I completed the button bands and collar, too. It’s looking mighty fine, if I do say so myself.
The bad news
I think the sleeve cap might be too puckery at the top, so I might have to set it in again. Or reknit it for the third time. I am not yet willing even to look closely at it, much less consider what has to be done.
More good news
I ordered five different buttons to try out, and they finally arrived yesterday.
More bad news
I don’t like any of them. I ordered some purple ones today, and I’m investigating a vintage button source. Buttons are hard.
The good thing about “two steps forward, one step back” is that you do get there eventually. Don’t you?
Your post had me LOL by the time i read “I don’t like any of them.” How typical is that ? Seriously, buttons are very hard to pick. You are also right that Middlebury is looking very fine indeed! I can’t tell the pucker from this angle.
Though I also would hate to think about a puckery sleeve cap at this point in the project, everything else looks lovely! Have you considered hook and eye style frog clasps or whatever they’re called, spanning the sweater front, instead of buttons? In metal or cording?

eventually. I completely agree about buttons, with every project that I’ve had with closures so far, finding the right ones has proven to be a complete PITA. In fact I have one sweater that’s been done for almost exactly a year right now, and for lack of the right buttons has never been finished. Sad.
I’m still completely loving that sweater though Ruth. It’s worth fixing the sleeve cap.
Haha, this would be part of the reason why I’ve never knit a sweater that required buttons. Way too many options! What if you found some that matched the pale yellowish color? I think they’d really pop, and would stand out against the darker colors.
