These vintage stocking patterns from Bernat were once quite popular, and many families (including my own) have collections of personalized Christmas stockings. I reproduce the patterns and charts here so that contemporary knitters can enjoy making stockings for their own families — or do some catch-up knitting for new family members! The patterns and charts are made available with permission from Bernat.

Read some helpful pattern tips for both patterns here.
Susan Rainey of The Rainey Sisters has adapted the Santa Claus Stocking for your pet! Her pattern is here.
PLEASE NOTE:
(1) The stocking “pak” kits in which these stockings were originally sold are no longer available for sale. You will have to purchase substitute yarns to make the pattern. There are some tips on choosing substitute yarns here.
(2) I do not knit stockings for payment. If you are interested in having someone knit a stocking for you, you might try contacting your local knitting shop and asking if they have a list of knitters interested in working for profit. Failing that, feel free to e-mail me. I have a short list of people who might be able to help you.
(3) If you have other vintage Bernat stocking patterns, I would be very interested in acquiring copies. I am pursuing the possibility of sharing other vintage Christmas stocking patterns on this website, though at the moment the only patterns I have access to are these two.

I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about the pattern, as well as to see pictures of your finished stockings. You can write to me at ruth@ruthlessknitting.com.

Ruth, thanks I was able to finally print off directions but I am not knitting the stocking myself and would love to show my friend a picture of the completed stocking. Any ideas? Thank you so much for all of your time. Nancy
I have the directions from a Bucilla kit —they are done on straight needles….and since the stocking won’t be worn the seam isn’t a problem. I think I will write and get permission to offer free on line.
All of my sisters, children, nieces, nephews, inlaws & grandchildren have hand knitted Christmas stockings from my mother. They are the one with the santa face with an agora beard, candy canes on the lower part & names on the upper. I have the pattern, but need to find someone to knit one for our newest family member. My mother passed away almost a year ago & I promised my sister that I would find someone. Any ideas on where to look? We live in Michigan near Frankenmuth & Saginaw. Thank you for any assistance you can offer us.
Hi-
If you are still looking for someone to knit this stocking i may be able to do it for you…
Laurel
I would love to get the Santa stocking knitted…one for this Christmas and a second by next Christmas. Do you think you could get the first one done by then?
How much would you charge?
Thanks.
Nancy

Did you find someone to knit this stocking for you? I’m making one for our newest family member and would be willing to help you out after christmas.
I have been searching for these stockings online, and really want our boys to have the same ones that (coincidentally) both my family and his family have had, but I don’t knit! Please let me know someone here is interested, and thank you for your blog!

Deb,
Check with Pam Cowger at jpcowgers@gmail.com. She does beautiful work!
I’m very new to knitting, but I have 15 of these stocking patterns. They were left to me by my Aunt Mary before she passed in an effort to learn to knit so that I could keep up our family tradition (everyone in our family has one)
My problem is that the graphs and directions are on separate sheets so that it really very difficult for me to match the right graph to the correct directions
I have been able to create 3 of them so far
Aly

Hi,
I would love to have the pattern for the single snowman stocking. I would be happy to pay for it. I have been looking for one for years. My aunt knitted each of us one alternating red and green backgrounds. Six of them hanging from our stair case looked awesome. I would love to do this for my kids.
Thank you so much for your help.
Hi Aly
I would love to get copies. I would be willing to pay. I am looking to do these for my children as they are getting married. Thank you so much!!
I think the Columbia Minerva pattern with the graph that has a full Santa with his arms in the air is actually the Noel pattern. Our family’s stockings have the full Santa with his arms in the air and he’s on a green background with a white heel, toe, and “cuff.” I got the pattern from her this year and my written instructions say Noel on it. (Or I could be completely wrong and she took the written instructions of the Noel pattern and the chart from the Kris Kringle pattern and made our stockings that way, effectively making this even more confusing to figure out.)
Hi Aly:
Too have been looking for the pattern for the Santa coming out of the Chimney. My mom got them for myself, my brother and sister when we were small. We are all grown with spouses of our own, and my sister has a little girl. When all our stocking were up hanging this Christmas I thought it would be great if I could find the pattern and make 4 more for next Christmas. If you have that pattern I would love to get it from you. I’m happy to pay for it. Please let me know.
I am looking for the stocking with the standing santa and pack on his back. It also has two trees in the next band above. It can be personalized with name and year of birth. I made one about 30 years ago for a godchild and would like to make one for her child. I am happy to pay expenses. I am Nicki at n.mcaninch@hotmail.com
Dear Aly,
My two brothers and I each had a different Bernat patterned stocking. For reasons passing understanding and probability–perhaps the gremlins who steal socks?–we have ALL three lost our stockings along the way. My aunt has the pattern for the one with the candle, wreath, and trees, shown in the photo above. She has continued to knit new family members stockings from just that pattern, but I would like to bring back the other patterns as well.
One brother had the pattern with the angora Santa, also shown above. So that one is covered. The other brother remembers a snowman holding a broom, and the broom had real bristles. Do either of your snowman patterns look like that?
Thanks so much for your help,
Teva
Do you have a reindeer stocking pattern you can send me. looking everywhere
I have an old McCall’s pattern w/reindeer, but they are small. In the leg of the stocking there is a row of small trees, then row with the reindeer, then another w/trees. Only two colors are used, main color for stocking plus white for the designs. I think I have the pattern scanned, but so far have just unearthed a picture of the stocking. Would be glad to share if this is what you’re looking for.
hi Aly-
i would like to get copies of the patterns and would be happy to pay for copying costs and postage as most of my patterns were destroyed in the 2010 Nashville flood and the ones i have been knitting are basically from memory.. I do have the santa faces with the candy canes so i wouldnt need that one. as i was able to get that one from Ruths link
thank you in advance just let me know how to pay you if you email me i can give you my mailing address thank you in advance!!!!!!! I am trying to re build my collection as the only ones i have were in my knitting bag at work with me the day of the flood.
thank you
Laurel
Hi Aly, My mother-in-law has knit way over 200 stockings for our families over the years. She is now in assisted living. I am going through her knitting supplies and found 3 stocking kits not even started. One of them has no directions. It is Santa’s Pack article 4130. I have someone who could make them for me but need the directions for the one. Let me know how much it would cost and I would be grateful to find them. Thanks
It looks as though the first listing under Columbia Minerva
“Christmas Stocking Kit – graph is missing” may be part of directions for a Bernat stocking as the type face is exactly like the Bernat directions.
Aly
First, thank you so much for all the work you put into this! I have been wanting the candle pattern for so long, for my husband, so he has a matching stocking to the one made for my children and me by my Godmother.
If anyone is interested in making the candle motif stocking for me, would you please reply to my email and let me know how much you would charge? Thanks so much!
Kristy Sheridan
by the way, my email is kristysheridan@verizon.net THANKS!
Hi Kristy-
are you still looking for someone to knit the stocking for you? If so feel free to email me

I have 5 of these stockings for myself, my husband and my 3 children. I made them all back in the early 80′s. I now have a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law that I would love to have them made for. Is there anyone who could do that for me before Christmas? And how much would that cost? Thank you very much.
Hi Barbara-
I just came across your post if you havent found anyone to knit the stockings for you and still want them done feel free to email me as i knit them all year long
Laurel
I am so proud that you put this online. My family all has one of these stockings. I was so worried about our increasing family and what to do. I have two sons getting married one in Feb. ’12 and one July ’12 and did not know what I would do. Thanks so much!! If you know anyone who knits please let me know as that will be my next project. Finding someone who is talented enough to do this. I just smock, no knitting skills.
i cannot tell you how happy i was to locate this stocking pattern. this has been a tradition in my family for over 50 years. My aunt and then my mom knit these stocking for everyone in our family. My mom is now sick and unable to communicate where the pattern is and I have torn her house apart looking. i am so happy to be able to continue this tradition. = )
Thank you SO much for your website – I had NO idea that our family tradition was also shared by so many. I have these for my two older children, but not my youngest (who is now five and really understanding now there is no stocking with her name on it). I would LOVE to be put in touch with someone who could knit one of these, I am VERY flexible about payment as I understand the value of ones hard work and time. Please email me at debijfair@mail.com.
Do you have the chart for the article no. 2665 kriss kringle pattern? I have the directions but the chart is old and hard to read. Thanks (Sorry if this is a duplicate).
I have been looking for many of these patterns for years. Please let me know how to aquire them. I have my original santa, candy cane sock pattern from the 70′s but made my first one for my cousins in the 60′s. I am excited to be able to add them to my pattern collection.
Thanks
Sue
You’ve just helped me make one of the members of my congregation very happy. She knit these patterns for her children and her grandchildren, but lost them somewhere along the way and now that the great-grandchildren are coming, she’d like to keep the tradition up. She’s not web-savvy and I was showing her Ravelry on my iPad, saying she might find something close — and there it was. Thank you for putting these up.
I have been knitting Christmas stockings for family members for many years. I have several patterns and would be willing to knit a stocking for you for your family member for next Christmas. My email address is: quiltlady246@msn.com.
